This map shows how licensed child care providers across Michigan have changed over time, comparing data from September 2022, September 2023, September 2024, and today. Each provider is displayed as a colored dot indicating whether it is new, closed, or open (no change in licensing status) since 2022. Open providers are further classified as increasing, decreasing, or unchanged in capacity since 2022. Hover over a dot to see the provider’s name and license number. You can filter the map by zip code, county, or economic development organizations. You can also view how child care access varies across community characteristics.
The map estimates the number of licensed slots based on each provider’s total licensed capacity and the ages they are licensed to serve. Data are updated daily under “Today’s” counts and annually each September from the Great Start to Quality database, which is linked with Michigan’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. Providers are categorized by license type (centers, family homes, or group homes).
